Stunning Imari charger with original paulownia wood box signed and dated C.1951. This plate was the work of Ogata Koen who won the Saga Prefecture Mayor prize with this plate in 1951. This launched him on a distinguished career and established him as the preeminent Imari artisan of the day. From Arita in Kyushu in southern Japan, this is the home of Imari. Sensational eye-catching set of 5 small blue and white plates using the 'inban' transfer printing process to put this exceptional design on porcelain plates. This design is a first; tsubo vases on a cloud diaper background. Very art deco feel and were made in c. 1925. In perfect condition, the bowl has three different scenes painted: swallows flying among mountains; camelia flowers against a red backdrop; and the auspicious pine, plum, and bamboo together symbolizing good fortune and prosperity.
