Lovely pair of quail frolicing among flowers and chrysanthemums on silver leaf paper backing. A small screen from the Edo Period, C.1860, would have been used for a Girls Day doll festival. Painted in the Rimpa syle, its size perfect for over a couch. Length:110cm and height:40cm. Very good condition with silver leaf faded here and there and one small peeling of silk border. Brilliant folk art piece. A clay 'Fushimi Ningyo' sumo doll from the 1930s. Fushimi Ningyo dolls were sought after souvenirs by visitors to Kyoto. Fushimi Inari being one of the must see great shrines of southern Kyoto. The detail of the arms and fabulous facial expression make this a collector's piece. Striking Meiji antique Japanese samurai boy's day doll. This figure is Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the second great shogun and unifier of Japan. He rose from being a stable boy to one of the greatest generals in Japanese history. He holds the shogun's sceptor in his right hand and wears the rare nobleman's Chinese style cap with side 'wings'.
