Wonderful carving of 'Tenjin' the Shinto god of learning. In ancient times he was unjustly exiled and became a hero in Japanese folklore. Is revered as the god of learning and many Shinto shrines all over Japan are dedicated to him. This piece is from the Taisho Period c. 1915. Cedar wood, gofun crushed oyster shell paint and glass eyes. Very regal with normal age wear. H: about 10" W: about 12". Ask for shipping quote.
