Wonderful Meiji Period C.1909 painting of a white egret standing on bamboo by the acclaimed master Hishida Shunso (1874-1911). One of Okakura Tenshin's puils, he played a major role in the Meiji era innovation of Nihonga. His real name was Hishida Miyoji and he was also know for his numerous paintings of cats. He was commissioned by the Tokyo National Museum and in 1898 he joined Okakura Tenshin in establishing the Nihon Bijutsuin. In 1903-1905 he traveled extensively overseas holding exhibitions in The United States and Europe. He was awarded the Order Of Culture. Excellent condition. Looks to have been remounted. Has the original kiri wood box. H:6ft x W: 2ft.
