Rare buddhist pilgrim coat worn on a pilgrimage during esoteric 'shugendo' ascetic practice. The Shingon buddhist practioner, usually a yamabushi priest, would walk from temple to temple over rugged mountains in the Omi Range in Mie Prefecture south of Kyoto. At each temple he would get a red seal stamp of the temple on the coat. Different dieties are stamped on the coat and esoteric sanskrit buddhist characters. Made of asa or fiber. Good condition.
