| C.1860 antique Japanese tetsubin tea ceremony kettle from the famed Ryubundo Iron Guild in Japan. The lid is bronze dipped in hot oil soon after firing to get the `yutenki` colored effect. The tsumami lid top is also bronze. The iron base features buddhist clouds and a dragon dancing among them in raised relief. The dragon or `ryu` dwells among the clouds symbolizing supreme wisdom and immortality. As a motif, the dragon`s presence on a household object was considered protection and auspicious, an invitation to good fortune. c.1860. (7" x 8", base to rim 5") (18cm x 20cm, base to rim 13cm).
