Incredible Late Edo Ryubundo Cloud Dragon Tetsubin
C.1860 antique Japanese tetsubin tea ceremony kettle from the famed Ryubundo Iron Guild in Japan. The lid is bronze dipped in hot oil soon after firing to get the `yutenki` colored effect. The tsumami lid top is also bronze. The iron base features buddhist clouds and a dragon dancing among them in raised relief. The dragon or `ryu` dwells among the clouds symbolizing supreme wisdom and immortality. As a motif, the dragon`s presence on a household object was considered protection and auspicious, an invitation to good fortune. c.1860. (7" x 8", base to rim 5") (18cm x 20cm, base to rim 13cm).
