Antique Japanese Meiji Wood Tenjin c.1900

Revered Tenjin is the symbol of virtue, loyalty and saint of scholars in Japan. Sugawara Michizane was a famous Japanese scholar and minister in the 8-9th century. The new emperor was jealous and exiled him. All kinds of disasters struck the new emperor's family and Kyoto. So the local people thought it was because his spirit was wronged and they made shrines to honor him and eventually every school house in Edo had a statue of him. Dais has a silk covering. c.1900. (Tenjin - 9½" x 17") (Tenjin - 24cm x 43cm) (Dias - 6½" x 18½") (Dias - 17cm x 47cm). EMS Shipping/Insurance to USA or Western Europe $120.
