| This antique Japanese shinto shrine plaque is from the late Meiji Period c.1890. The characters read 'Inari Jingya' (Inari Shrine). Many shinto shrines have a separate structure where Inari Daimyojin, the deity of abundant rice harvests and wealth in all forms, is worshipped. The guardians of such a sanctuary are two foxes, one carrying a jewel or scroll giving power, the other a key to a chest of treasures. c.1890. (25" x 18") (64cm x 46cm).
