Antique Japanese Gosho Doll c.1900

Japanese 'gosho ningyo' dolls were named after Kyoto's Imperial Palace (the Gosho) where the emperor and empress resided. In Edo Period (17th and 18th century) when visitors came to the capital gosho ningyo were presented as gifts to feudal lords by members of the court nobility. The lustrous white surface was created by polishing the gofun (crushed oyster shell and rice paste) with which the clay was coated. This little boy wears the hat of a sambaso dancer. Sambaso, a dance of ancient origin, is generally performed at New Years. c.1900. (9" x 8") (23cm x 20cm). EMS Shipping/Insurance to USA or Western Europe $55.
