Fushimi Clay Antique Japanese Boy's Day Samurai c.1860

This antique Japanese 'tsuchi ningyo' or fired clay samurai is called a Nagahama Ningyo because it was a souviner from the great castletown of Nagahama in Ishimi-Han in Late Edo (1860). Craftsman started making clay dolls here from 1764. The technique is called 'suyaki' (terracota) whereby clay is hand pressed into molds in halves and then put together and fired. Natural dye paint ornamentation is then applied after. This samurai is the legendary Minamoto Yoshitsune, who holds almost mythical status in Japan for his heroic feats and for helping to establish the Minamoto Clan as the Shogunate in Kamakura in 1192. The lower left back was redone with Japanese washi and kanji script. c.1860. (11" x 7" x 5½") (28cm x 18cm x 14cm). EMS Shipping/Insurance to USA or Western Europe $60.
