| This antique Japanese 'kyo-yaki' ceramic from Kyoto in late Meiji (1867-1912) is an Edo Period sumo referee (shimpan). He is holding a 'gunbai' or ceremonial fan behind his back used in the pre-match ceremony and after the match to indicated the winner. Also he is holding an ancient Heian Period gunbai in the front. His costume is one the sumo referees used in the Edo Period. The fan in back is missing one rib but this is also questionable; it could be that is the way the piece was fired. (11½" x 7" )(29cm x 18cm). EMS Shipping/Insurance to USA or Western Europe $75 | ||
