Wonderfully carved antique Japanese noh mask, signed on the back, "KOKUTSURU". This mask is the character 'koomote' the main actor in the noh plays, 'Kocho' and 'Funa-Benkei'. Carved out of hinoki or Japanese cypress wood and with many layers of 'gofun', a crushed oyster pigment. The expression is very expressive and the condition is excellent. c.1910.
