Very Rare Pair of Korean Black Lacquer Mother-Of-Pearl Mungap (Stationery Chest). 'Mun' means things pertaining to culture, and 'gap' means low chest. These chests were given this name because they were used as a repository for items related to cultural life, such as rolls of paper, brushes, ink sticks and ink stones. One door lifts out, and then other doors can slide over and lift out. Dimensions of each chest: 18h x 38w x 11.5d inches, 45.75h x 96.5 x 29.25 cm.

Black Lacquered Mother of Pearl Table. This is a low table used in ancestor worship rituals. The gorgeous peony flower is a symbol of abundance and wealth. The delightfully rendered dokkaebi goblins that adorn each leg are guardians that chase away evil spirits. The clouds are symbols of Heaven, and the plum blossoms are symbols of courage. As you can see in the photo, there is some loss to one of the dokkaebi goblins, but this table is in otherwise amazing and excellent condition. 25w x 13d x 11.75h inches, 63.5w x 33d x 30h cm.

A Very Rare 19th Century Korean Black Lacquered Mother of Pearl Soban (individual dining table), with cranes (symbols of immortality, and eternal love when they are paired, as they are here), pine tree (symbol of longevity), orchids (symbol of purity and modesty), bullocho (the mythical longevity plant) and bamboo (symbol of resilience). There is loss to some of the mother of pearl, but it can be replaced by a Korean artisan. This is reflected in the very low price for this fine, beautiful, and rare piece. We do not restore or refinish our items. We leave it up to the client to decide if they want to do it. 15w x 12d x 9.25h inches, 38w x 30.5d x 23.5h cm.
