Though Taewongun (Prince Yi Ha Eung) is often cited as the greatest painter of orchids, most scholars now agree that it was Kim Eung Won aka Soho (1855-1921) who was painting many of the paintings for which Daewongun took credit and which Daewongun signed. Daewongun was, of course, a great painter of orchids, but most agree now that Kim Eung Won may deserve the title of greatest. His paintings sell for a fraction of the price of Daewongun's paintings, at least for now. That can be expected to change as the general public catches up with the scholarship on the subject. Ink on silk. Scroll: 72.5 x 19 inches, 184.15 x 48.25 cm; Painting: 45 x 13.5 inches, 114.25 x 34.25 cm. (A much smaller Daewongun painting just sold at Christie's for $12,500 on March 18, 2014).

Rare Antique and Genuine Traditional Korean Shaman's Bells (Muryoeng) used in shaman rituals for Summoning Good Spirits and Repelling Bad Spirits. You often see these bells depicted in antique paintings of Korean shamans. These shaman's bells that we offer here are not to be confused with the modern reproductions that you see for sale on eBay. These are genuine shaman implements with old workmanship and a beautiful patina from many years of traditional use a very long time ago. They are rare because they are normally buried or destroyed when the shaman dies. For a similar example of antique Korean shaman's bells bells, please see page 223 of The Collection of the National Folk Museum of Korea, published in 2012. This set of shaman's bells is particularly rare, because they are engraved with the characters for long life and happiness, as you can see in the close-up photos here. 8 inches, 20.25 cm.

Rare 19th Century Korean Scholar's Portable Brush and Ink Well (Mukho). See Horim Museum's website to see 3 similar mukhos. This one is very special, as it includes the original brush, and is exquisitely carved copper with silver inlay. Please look at the close-up photos here of the key fret pattern (based on ancient pictographs of thunder) on the handle, the bullocho mythical longevity plant on the back of the well, and especially the creative Dragon in Bullocho-Shaped Clouds on the lid. This is a very beautifully designed and inventive implement that would have been very important and highly regarded by the traveling scholar. The handle ingeniously acts as a tube for the brush. As seen in the last photo here (#6), it pairs very nicely with the rare Joseon Period Inkstone with lid on our site (Stock # 1101) and makes a very nice addition to any collection of Asian scholar's items. These never come with the original brush, as old brushes were always discarded, so the brush here is new and is photographed here just to illustrate the way the mukho functions. Length: 7.25 inches, 18.5 cm.

Colorful Early 20th Century Embroidered Silk Bojagi Patchwork Wrapping Cloth (Chogakbo) with cotton backing. The cranes are a longevity symbol. When they are paired like this, they symbolize eternal love, because it was believed that cranes mated for life. They carry in their beaks the mythical bullocho longevity plant. The corners of the centerpiece have pine tree needles, another longevity symbol. Throughout the wrapping cloth there are embroidered cranes, deer (another longevity symbol), and bamboo trees. The bamboo is an ancient symbol of resilience and integrity. When faced with a strong wind, the bamboo bends but does not break, just as the person with determination and principle, even when pressed down, doesn't give up and resumes their upright posture. 32 x 32 inches, 81 x 81 cm.
