Beautiful Antique Korean Lady's Dagger with Exquisitely Detailed Engraving of mountains and two deer (symbols of longevity), bamboo (symbol of resilience), pine tree (symbol of longevity and integrity), the mythical bullocho longevity plant, a plum blossom in the center (symbol of courage), The back is engraved with beautifully stylized akebia mountain root (symbol of good health), and plantain (symbol of resuscitation from death). The chopsticks are adorned with a lovely persimmon, symbol of joy. The delightfully rendered and abundant symbolism served to inspire and reassure the woman who bore this dagger. It was worn by a woman of rank as a chest pendant and a symbol of her social standing. This dagger also served as a tool to save women from personal humiliation or peril, not by attacking an assailant but by killing themselves, under the Confucian moral obligation of medieval Korea 'to remain faithful to one spouse'. 7.5 inches, 19 cm. There is some solder repair to the back.
