Stunning, Rare Pair Painted Wood Royal Palace Dragons
Beautiful Pair of Rare 19th Century Korean Royal Palace Dragons. Because of the dragon's ancient status in many Asian cultures as the king of all mythical creatures, Choson Dynasty law would have prevented the use of dragons as architectural sculpture by anyone but royalty. The influence from Chinese Foo Dogs is obvious (regional takes on Foo Dogs may be seen throughout East Asia), but the style, size, and design all point to these being from Korea, where we did acquire them. Genuine and very old examples such as these are rarely offered for sale, and we claim with the utmost confidence that you'll never see any more powerful than this pair, whether in a museum or anywhere else for that matter. When compared to others, this very fine pair has an extraordinary amount of fine detail, and makes use of expensive mineral pigments and gilding. This will be a most proud addition to any home, office, or collection. 19 x 7.25w x 8.25 inches, 48 x 18.5w x 21 cm. Other than some minor loss, both are in Very Good Condition with remarkably well preserved original mineral pigments and gilding.
