Historical Screen from Korean President Park Chung Hee
A beautiful 6-paneled embroidered screen of ritual vessels. This screen is filled with fascinating history. It was a gift, dated April 3, 1962, from General Park Chung Hee to General Lyman Lemnitzer, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1960 to 1962, and Supreme Allied Commander of NATO from 1963 to 1969. Park had just led a coup and was soon to appoint himself President of Korea, later to be assassinated by his own best friend who he had appointed as the head of Korea's CIA. So this gift was from the brief period of time between the coup and Park's self-appointment as President. Lemnitzer himself has an interesting and colorful history. He was played by the actor John Seitz in the 1991 Oliver Stone film, 'JFK', and is often connected by conspiracy theorists to the assassination of JFK. So you have here a beautiful example of Korean embroidery on a six paneled screen that is a piece of a fascinating time in Korean and US history. 87w x 52.25h inches, 221w x 133h cm.
