| A fine and unusual quatrefoil form measuring 7.5 x 3.25 wide. The overall theme including fine examples of creatures of Japanese folklore. The vase enameled in alternating pink and aqua panels. The pink panels containing naturalistic decoration of birds among flowering rose bushes or vining plants. The Aqua panels containing a colorful phoenix (ho-o) in flight among stylized cloud scrolls or a delicate KIRIN (gentle part deer part dragon whose gentleness is said not to even displace so much as a leaf blade as it prances through the forest) also among stylized cloud scrolls. The neck and shoulder intricately enameled with overlapping frolicking foo dogs (shi-shi) variously patterned and colored. The panels separated at each rounded shoulder corner with a roundel (or mon). The ground below this point enameled with numerous Morigame (ancient turtles whose back side have evolved into long sweeping feathery-like tails.) The Morigame depicted as a view point behind the panels, the parts between the panels exposed to the viewer as the scene appears continuous, interrupted only by the presence of the four separate scenes. This piece was truly a tour-de-force, both technically and in design concept for the time it was made (before or up to about 1885-1890). As Japanese cloisonne approached its zenith, around 1900, this vase shows us the leaps and bounds made in so short of time, of Japanese Cloisonne reaching it's "Golden Age". The piece is in perfect condition with no hairlines, stress lines or chips. No Restoration. | |||||||||||||||
