Japanese Metalwork Sake & Hot Water Pot Combination

This is an unusual and fascinating combination sake and hot water pot crafted so that it could be brought to the table on a cold winter night. It has its own hibachi which allowed for boiling water for tea and/or warming sake. It works on a similar principal to a double boiler which allows you to heat the sake and keep it hot without boiling it. The set consists of six separate bronze pieces. Glowing coals would be placed in the little tray, which was then inserted into the base of the large rectangular section, which was then filled with water from the top. This entire section is then placed into the opening in the square base which would keep sparks from flying out from the glowing embers. The little separate ewer with short spout could be filled with sake and warmed. The lids are interchangeable and you can just heat up water for tea without using the sake ewer. All of the handles are clad with woven reeds to protect your fingers from the heat. Height: 8.4" Late 19th c.
