| This outstanding signed Kinkozan Japanese Satsuma vase depicts two enchanting panels, each set in an irregularly shaped reserves outlined with a thin gold band of swirled design. One panel is that of an idyllic garden of Peonies, Chrysanthemums, and Chinese Bell flowers offset with an intricately braded fence and a small stream. Set in the center is a little garden lantern. The second panel portrays an enticing Japanese garden place set in a landscape scene of majestic pine tress, a blossoming cherry tree, and a garden of multicolored blossoms being viewed a group of Japanese ladies and gentleman. The high level of detail can be seen in the background painting of a group of people crossing the river’s bridge and tiny farmers tilling the soil. Separating the panels is an amazingly dense, gold floral pattern set on the royal blue glaze that is quite distinctive of the Kinkozan workshop. The piece stands 7.0 in. tall and is original MINT condition. The vase is signed Kinkozan with both the gold characters on black and an impressed Kinkozan seal. No Restoration. c. 1910. The history of Kinkozan began in 1635 in Kyoto and in 1756 the third generation was appointed official potter to the Tokugawa Shogun and was given the name Kinkozan. By the late 19th century the name of Kinkozan was associated with some of the finest Satsuma wares to be found. The outstanding high quality of the studios work was exhibited at many world exhibitions at the turn of the century, winning numerous important prizes and medals. | |||||||||||||
