Large Samurai Doll in armor and helmet

A very impressive Japanese samurai doll (35 1/2" total) for the Boy's Day in Japan. The Boy's Day in May was traditionally reserved for the boys in a family to prevent them from sickness and hope to keep evil spirits away for the year. It is also an occasion to encourage their manhood by displaying hero figures from the past.

The attire of the doll is of Samurais from the Kamakura period (1192-1333). The armors and clothes show the amazing quality with details. The damage on his ear is limited to the top area, the rest is his hair covering the ear. The faint lines that you see around his temple area are not cracks; they are veins. His face with textured skin like finish shows the influence from the Iki ningyo living dolls from the late Edo to early Meiji period. Taisho to early Showa period, 1910-1940.

The dimensions: Total of 35 1/2 inches high to the tip of Sashimono flag pole, doll is 23 1/2 inches high without helmet, 27 1/2 inches on a 4 inch stand. Circa, 1900 to 1940.
