Antique Japanese samurai doll, a flag-bearer sitting on a chair, 15 inches tall to the top of his head. This is a popular retainer doll paired with a general doll for the Japanese Boy’s Day. All the retainer dolls are usually not handsome; some look quite funny contrary to the handsome general dolls. You can even see a size difference for some in the set; there will be a big handsome general doll and a small retainer doll with a funny face to enhance the difference. The armor and clothes on this doll are finely made, not in the quality for a foot soldier. This doll alone looks impressive enough but it must have been a quite spectacular display when the doll was placed together with a general doll or other dolls as the Empress Jingo trio dolls. A flag pole (30 inches long), flag banner, hat, shoulder pads and a chair were added later. Circa, Meiji period (1868-1912). |
