A set of Japanese Tsuge (boxwood) combs from the mid Showa period (1926-1989). The combs are made from Tsuge wood and have been known as the best kind of combs for their gentleness and are used by women and men. They were especially treasured by women in the old time when they used oil to style their long hair. Tsubaki camellia oil was used to clean between uses and this gave a deeper tone. The combs are in new condition. When we purchased this set from Kyoto, we were told that they were made in 1950. The dimensions of the combs and pin from left to right (on photo #1) are 3 7/8”L x 1 5/8”W, 5 5/8”L, 4 1/2”L, 5 3/4”L, 5”L. |
