We have not seen this type of lantern until now. The silk is lifted here and there and detached from the frames with some deterioration (probably a reaction to the glue or metal). The amazing thing is how the original colors maintained without fading. Most frames were made out of lacquered wood (early to mid 1900s) which may have changed to other materials today. Because of the shrinking that the wood goes through, older Bonboris did not survive well. The label in the box suggests that it was made in Osaka by Hina-ya Saemon (very old name). The city Osaka is located by Kyoto where quality dolls were made at the time. Circa Meiji (1868-1912).
