African art Bamum tribe wooden table ca. 1890-1900
$9500 plus shipping

This is a very rare and interesting wooden table or stool from the Bamum tribe, ca. 1890-1900. The kingdom of Bamum or Bamoum, also known as Bamun or Bamoun or Mum (13941884) was a pre-colonial West African state in what is now northwest Cameroon. It was founded by the Mbum, a part-Bantu ethnic group from northeast Cameroon. Its capital was the ancient walled city of Fumban. The table is carved as two men on opposite sides, standing in the base of the table and wach supporting the table top. There are cracks in both the base and the top of the table. See photos for details. Height is 14"; diameter is 10".
