A miniature portrait painting on natural organic material of a young woman. This type painting, depicting a sitter wearing glasses, is quite uncommon, even more so with female sitters. Done in a folky, rather than an academic, style, the woman is clad in a black gown edged in lace, and wearing a brooch and long gold necklace. Interestingly enough, the glasses are shown with a gilded frame.
The miniature is in excellent condition, with no cracks, bowing, or restoration. The right edge of the mini does not go quite to the edge of the foliate, cast bronze locket, which might have occurred while the artist was working on the piece, or might have broken off later. It is truly a minor issue as it does not affect the image at all. The reverse of the locket has a hair braid in the aperture, which is missing its surround and glazing. The sight size of this little gem is 2 1/2" by 2".
