A finely rendered American watercolor on ivory of H. Reinewald, a red-haired, blue-eyed gentleman. He is dressed in a black coat and vest, and is wearing a grayish-blue tie. What is unusual for portraits of this period is that he is shown wearing glasses. Other items of interest are the red and gold stickpin and the long chain he is wearing around his neck. The miniature is in a cast foliate locket with an engine turned reverse with elaborately braided hair in the glazed aperture. Under the aperture is engraved "H. Reinewald", the name of the sitter. Condition of the portrait is excellent, with no chips, bowing, cracks, or restoration. The locket is in good condition, but the reverse is dented, and shows wear. The locket is 2 3/8" by 2", while the painting itself is 2 3/16" by 1 3/4". |
