A fine watercolor on wafer portrait miniature of a woman wearing a white lace cap with a blue ribbon, and a yellow dress, housed in its original gold pendant case with a pin, to be worn as a brooch. The painting was almost certainly done by Philip Jean (or Philippe Jean).
The painting is in excellent condition, with no issue. The case, which has elaborately woven plaits of hair in the glazed reverse, has a very small nick on the back. Sight size is 1 7/8" by 1 1/2", and the case size is 2 1/8" by 1 3/4".
Note: Philip Jean (1755 - 1802) was born in Saint Ouen, Jersey, to Huguenot parents. He served in the English Royal Navy, but later spent his life as an artist, primarily as a miniaturist, living in London. While there, he was commissioned to paint portraits of many members of the British Royal Family, including George III, Queen Charlotte, and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester. and of their children. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1787 to 1802. His works are exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum, Windsor Castle, and other important venues.
