A truly captivating portrait on paper, of New England origin, of a young girl holding a basket of greens recently picked from the field she is standing in. The composition is charmingly naive, yet well structured, with the figure slightly to the left of center, counterbalanced by a tree to the right, fields behind her, and a rock in the foreground.
The condition is excellent, with vibrant colors, no tears, holes, inpainting, etc. Please note that the actual painting is much better in person than the photo shown, which is not the best quality and is more yellowish than in real life, The frame is period, and the backboard also displays excellent oxidation, though it might be a few years later as it shows circular saw marks. Sight size is 5 1/4" by 4 1/4", and the framed size is 8 1/2" by 7 5/8".
This portrait is from a very fine private collection of folk art.
