A beautifully done American miniature painting on ivory of a pretty young woman. Careful attention to detail in the sausage curls, the tortoise barrette, the coral necklace, the highlighted lace with a brooch, to say nothing of the delicacy with which the face and eyes are painted, add to the charm of this work. There is lightly pencilled writing on the reverse, of which I can make out "Dear Margaret" and part of some other words. The painted wood frame might be original. There is some minor staining and scraping at the edge of the painting, which does not show unless the piece is removed from the frame. Sight size is 2 3/4" by 2 1/2", and the framed size is 6" by 5". |
