A superbly painted American miniature portrait on ivory, signed on the lower right by the artist, W.S. Herman. The painting depicts his charming and extremely pretty daughter, Barbara. She is standing in a garden with multicolored impressionistic foliage in the background. Wearing a white dress with an elaborate lace top, she is holding a bouquet matching the circlets of flowers embroidered on the dress. Completing the attire is a cap edged with an additional line of embroidered flowers.
William S. Herman lived and worked in Flushing, and Great Neck, New York. Although he concentrated on full size landscapes and portraits, many on a commission basis, he also did portraits in the miniature format. These were, in fact, some of his best renderings. Although not a listed artist, he was well-known and highly respected in western Long Island.
The sight size of the painting shown here is 4 7/8 inches tall and 3 7/8 inches wide. The original bronze frame is 5 3/8 inches by 4 3/8 inches. Condition of the painting and the frame is excellent, with no repairs or problems.
Note: This painting was acquired from a direct descendant of the artist, along with miniature portraits of 4 other family members, which will shortly be listed.
