Early 19th C. Italian Neoclassical Walnut Cupboard
An Italian Neoclassical Early 19th Century Marquetry Inlaid Walnut Cupboard, the rectangular top with outstepped corners above three frieze drawers. The cupboard below enclosed by a pair of paneled doors between canted angles headed by female masks and raised on square tapered legs, the decoration of oval shell motifs within foliate scroll trailing borders add to the elegance of this rich walnut cupbopard. H:36" W:4' D:24" The history of the cupboard or buffet as we know it was developed in France during the 16th-century French term buffet applied both to the display itself and to the furniture on which it was mounted, often draped with rich textiles, but more often as the century advanced an elaborately carved cupboard surmounted by tiers of shelves in the 18th century, soon spreading throughout Europe. The term originally referred to the sideboard where the food was served, but eventually became applied to the form. The architectural elelments of inlay tell a wonderful story of the romantic style of the Neoclassical period.
