L.18thE.19thC. Italian Neoclassical Gilt Palazzo Settee
Late 18th to Early 19th Century Antique Italian Neoclassical Painted and Gilded Palazzo Settee, newly upholstered in a elegant celadon green stripe with texture. H:40.5" W:8'7" D:23" Seat H:20" Seat D:19". This particular example of a Palazzo Settee is with fine wood carving along the frame of painted Gilt detail to accent the detail in the frame of the settee. Historically, a settee, also called a sofa, is an upholstered seat with back and arms (sometimes upholstered), designed for two or more people in a sitting or reclining position. Throughout early history the evolution of the settee was different than earlier styles of couches and daybeds (seating intended for reclining as much as sitting). The settee, on the other hand, began life as a double chair furnished with cushions, and rapidly evolved as other seating fashions changed. In the grand Palazzo's the need for elegant and seating is illustrated with this fine settee. The evolution of the settee from the 17th century are frequently not upholstered but sometimes cane-seated to provide more comfort than a settle. Thereafter settees were made much as other upholstered seating, paralleling all major styles and social history of the latest fashion. Now the term settee reflects, occasioning closer sitting, or were known as “courting settees” or “loveseats.” This is a fine example of a Palazzo Settee and would adorn any decor of elegance and comfort.
