L. 19th C. Gilt Bronze Guerideon Circular Table
Late 19th Century Gilt Bronze Guerideon (in the Louis XVI Style). The circular top is supported by griffin monopodiae over a relief cast surface depicting classical figures within a floral banding centering a portrait medallion raised on fluted columnar legs banded with grotesque masks ending in paw feet. A beautiful example of Antique English or French Furniture influence with a marble circular top and a center gilt bronze medallion rosette. H:32 4/4" Diameter:16 1/4". The Gilt Bronze Circular table is of a Neoclassical style, sometimes called Louis Seize, or Louis XVI, began in the 1750s. Tiring of the Rococo style, craftsmen of the 18th century turned for inspiration to classical art. The movement was stimulated by archaeological discoveries, by travel in Italy, Greece, and the Near East, and by the publication, all over Europe, of works on the classical monuments. The term guéridon is a small, often circular center table supported by one or more columns, or sculptural human, or mythological figures. This Decorative kind of furniture first originated in France towards the middle of the seventeeth century. The stylistic characteristic style of the early guéridon tables were often supported by an African, ancient Egyptian or ancient Greek human figure motifs. The purpose and or used in the social décor were to hold a candlestick or vase, the guéridon could also be a high style decorative piece of court furniture. By the death of Louis XIV there were several hundreds of them at Versailles, and within a generation they had taken an infinity of forms: columns, tripods, and mythological figures. Some of the simpler and more artistic forms were of wood carved with familiar decorative motives and gilded. Silver, enamel, and indeed almost any material from which furniture can be made, have been used for their construction. A variety of small occasional tables are now guridons in French. However, the popularity of these designs influenced the English Designers and craftsmen so the popularity of such tables were in vogue among the English Society in their décor. This small decorative table is a fine example of elegance and design.
