| Woven twine and raffia on a wire armature and paint, are the materials used by the anonymous artist to create this black itinerant preacher,a bible under his arm, mounted on his horse.The bible's front page says, "HOLY BIBLE Contains 224 Pages of the New Testament Of Our Lord Jesus Christ", then a picture of a cross and a shepherd's crook and words under that "Printed in U.S.A." The Bible is 1 1/8" wide and 1 1/2" tall. Wonderful folk art figure. His saddle is a bit of old checkered cloth. Hard to date. I would guess ,most definitely,pre WWII,may be earlier. The condition is generally very good. The exception is the horse's ears. They have been repaired - one with glue ,the other with a pin -it is possible to improve upon the repairs,perhaps... The overall height of the preacher mounted on the horse is 12 1/4" and the overall width is about 9 1/2". | |||||||||||||||
