This is a Victorian hinged Snuff Box, made of papier-mache with a 'faux tortoiseshell' papered lid, & dating to around 1850. The box is rectangular in form, with the hinged lid having a protruding lip to enable opening. The lid has an overlay of heavy paper with a design meant to represent (the more expensive) tortoiseshell. CONDITION : Great for it's 157 years, the lid cover has the expected edge wear & discolouration (there is a scratch through the paper - Please see photos) The hinge is fine with a little rusting, as would be expected (Please Note : the hinge is a '3 part' hinge, not a 'piano' hinge found on later boxes), & the fit is excellent and tight. DIMENSIONS : The box measures approx 7cm in Length, 3cm in Width, & just over 2cm in Depth |
