Silver Rimmed Match Holder / Striker - Chester 1907

This is an Edwardian table match holder / striker, made of unglazed pottery with a sterling silver rim, fully hallmarked for Chester 1907.

The holder is designed as a pot with an attached, scalloped edge tray, & is finished in an unglazed dark green colour.

The 'pot' has a glazed interior with a moulded, ribbed striker to one side, & a silver rim.

The tray, presumably for spent matches, has applied white decorations, with a central cameo scene of a gentleman & his dog, sitting on a tree trunk, smoking a pipe.

The whole piece is designed to look like Wedgwood Jasperware, although it does not have the quality of the former.

The silver rim is fully hallmarked with the makers mark 'J & RG' (for J & R Griffin), the lion passant (925 sterling), the wheatsheafs (Chester), & the date letter 'g' (1907 - 08).

Condition is very good for it's 100 years, there are 3 tiny bruises to the top of the silver rim, & the makers mark and date letter are quite rubbed. The pottery is fine with no chips, cracks, or repairs.

The holder is approx 2" high, 3 1/4" across the tray, & just over 3 1/2" from front to back.
