This is a George V, Art Deco style, Sterling Silver 5 piece dressing table set, by the renowned silversmith William Devenport, complete in a fitted case, & with all pieces fully hallmarked in Birmingham. The set consists of 2 large hair brushes, 2 smaller clothes brushes, & a large hand mirror. Each piece has geometric, engine turned pattern to the back, with a plain silver border & a central circular cartouche, engraved with the stylised initials 'RED'? Although all pieces are matching, the date letters vary, which is quite common on such sets. Each piece is hallmarked with the makers mark 'WD' (for William Devenport, who worked from Northwood St, Birmingham), the lion passant (925 sterling), the anchor (Birmingham), & the date letters as follows : Clothes Brushes ('z' & 'A' for 1924 & 1925), Hair Brushes ('E' for 1929), & the Mirror ('G' for 1931). The box, which has a drop down front, is covered in faux blue leather, with the interior lid being finished in a cream 'silk' & the fitted base finished in Navy velvet. Condition is good for their 80 odd years, I don't think the brushes have ever been used, although the bristles have discoloured with age, & the bristles on one clothes brush are misshapen. The silver backs are very good, 1 hair brush has three small bruises & the mirror has two tiny depressions, the bevelled glass is perfect. The box is solid, but a bit scruffy - Please see photos. Dimensions are : Hair Brush - 9 1/2" in length, Clothes Brush - 6 1/4" in length, & the mirror - 10 1/4" in length. The box is 14" x 7 3/4" x 3 1/4". ` |
