This is a heavy, solid Silver Austro-Hungarian watch chain, with attached solid Silver swivel garnet fob, circular clasp, & dog clip, with each individual piece fully hallmarked for Vienna, circa 1890. Chain : This is a heavy Curb chain with 42 links, with around 8 or 9 of the links bearing the Austro-Hungarian small standard Silver hallmark (a cartouche with a lions head, with the number 4 to the right - for .750 Silver, & the letter A to the left - for Vienna). Another two of the links have the partially rubbed makers mark of '?.B'. Dog Clip : the clip has a swivel top & bears the partially rubbed .750 Silver Vienna hallmark as above. Circular Clip : this is a large hollow circular clip, with an inner tubular sleeve, which slides open & closed via a 'button' to the side. The clip is probably a later addition, & carries the early Austro-Hungarian import mark ('A' in a cartouche) which was used from 1891 to 1901. Garnet Fob : this is a swivel fob, on a 7 link chain, with a large oval faceted Garnet ? enclosed in a Silver bezel setting. The shoulders have an impressed geometric design to both sides, & the bezel setting has a gadrooned lip. The fob is hallmarked 4 times, with the makers mark of 'F or E.B' & the Vienna .750 Silver hallmark to the rim of the bezel. These hallmarks are repeated on the fixed ring at the top of the fob. The oval Garnet ? has a 'blackcurrant' or purplish colour to it when held to the light. The crown of the stone has a large table, & both the table and the facet edges of the pavilion have scratches - please see the magnified image. Condition is fine, some hallmarks are partially rubbed. Total length is approx 15" or 38cm. The garnet fob is just under 1 1/2". Total weight is 81.8 g, 2.89 oz, or 2.63 Troy. The Austro-Hungarian hallmarks on the piece were used (with the town mark) from 1872 - 1922, with the import mark on the (later ?) clasp from 1891 - 1901, so we would date the piece to around 1890. |
