This is an Edwardian era Tray, hand made from Golden Oak with a hand carved Arts & Crafts / Art Nouveau design, & dating to around the middle of the 1900's. The rectangular tray has been made from a single piece of Oak, and has scalloped ends & rounded edges. The central panel of tray has been hand carved in relief with a very Art Nouveau / Knox inspired 'Tulip' design at either end and, unusually, a large central Pentacle (or Pentagram, not sure which) design. The carving, although quite 'amateur' in it's execution, is well done & is certainly a one off. The original metal handles are very much of the period, with a very Nouveau form, & have a copper finish, although this is very worn. There are two 'galleries' at either end of the tray, which have been made from a lighter coloured wood and are affixed, like the handles, with screws to the base. The tray measures approx 19" long and 11" wide. The Oak has a lovely Golden colour & patina that can only come with age, which is around 100 years in this case. Condition is very good, the tray is very strong & flat, with no warping at all (the Oak is quite thick & very solid). The base has age related scratching & there are two small & shallow splits on the base (at either end where the handles are attached, these are shallow & do not affect the top, or the structure). Overall, a lovely period tray in lovely condition, with a very unusual design, & certainly a one-off. ` |
