Art Deco Oak 'SMITHS BAROTHERM' Barometer Thermometer

This is an original Art Deco period desktop or wall hanging aneroid barometer / thermometer combination, in a simple but classic design evocative of the period, & made in England by Smiths around the 1930's to 40's.

The barometer is set within a rectangular Oak case, which has slightly convex top & bottom edges, with an applied bevelled Oak decorative panel to either side.

The rear of the barometer has an aluminium or alloy grille panel, which is fixed by means of 6 little screws, the 4 corner screws also holding little circular feet. There is also a 'keyhole' aperture to enable wall hanging, & a larger circular hole which gives access to the barometers adjustment screw.

The face of the barometer, which is glazed with a chromed rim, has a satin silver colour with black text. The face is marked with a dial to the outside numbered 28 to 31, with indications of expected weather conditions to the inside (stormy, rain, changeable, fair, very dry). There is a subsidiary dial at the bottom of the face for the thermometer, which is marked from 20 to 100 in Fahrenheit.

The dial is marked 'MADE IN ENGLAND', 'SMITHS', 'BAROTHERM' & 'BRITISH PATS APPLIED FOR'.

The barometer & thermometer needles have a blued finish, and there is also an 'indicator' needle, sitting directly above the barometer needle, which is adjusted manually via a chromed thumbscrew in the centre of the face.

Condition is Fine, the barometer & thermometer both work (although I can't guarantee the accuracy), the Oak case has a few minor spots of rubbing to the varnish (mostly on the base, & only needing varnish if required - there are NO bumps or knocks), fantastic for it's 70 odd years.

The barometer is approx 8 3/4" long, 6 5/8" high, & 2" deep. The actual face is approx 5 1/4" in diameter (inc rim). (approx 22cm, 16.8cm, 5cm, & 13.3cm).
