Victorian Spelter & Glass Figural 'Owl' Inkwell c.1890

This is a figural spelter inkwell mounted on a later marble base, in the form of an owl, & dating from the late 19th Century.

The owl has been cast in spelter, with nice & sharp detailing to the feathers.

The owl's head, which has it's original glass eyes, hinges backwards to reveal the interior compartment where the original well would have sat, supported by the interior lip. The original well is not present, although glass replacements are readily available.

The owl has it's original, threaded screw fittings to it's base, but has been mounted on a later, circular marble base. The owl is easily removed from the base (it just unscrews), should you wish to replace the base.

Condition of the inkwell is Good, the hinge is fine & the cast detail is very sharp. There is the expected wear (minor) to the interior edges of the opening, & there is some loss of solder 'filler' to the two 'main body' seams (which are located on the leading edge of one wing, & a little further back on the other wing) - very good for it's 120 years & structurally sound, please see magnified photos.

The later marble base has a felted bottom & has had a repair to one side

The inkwell stands approx 4 1/4" high, with the actual owl standing approx 3 3/4" high (approx 10.8 cm & 9.5 cm)
