This is an Early Nottingham style wood & brass starback centre pin fishing reel, probably used for salmon or sea fishing, & dating to the early 20th Century. The reel is made of wood, with a brass starback / foot, & has an optional check. The drum is wooden with a brass inner flange, a wing nut fixing, & two bulbous handles with brass escutcheons. The reel is in original, unrestored condition, but is overall very good with the expected marks & rubbing to the wooden finish. The wood is very strong with no splits, the drum turns smoothly & the loud check works fine. The only thing to note is that the original check button (to switch the ratchet on & off) is missing & has been replaced (a very long time ago) with a fairly crudely cut square of brass. This replacement 'button' is quite stiff &, if not pushed fully, will not engage the ratchet. The reel measures approx 5" in diameter, 2" in width, with an internal width approx 1 1/4" (approx 12.6cm, 6cm, & 3cm). The reel is very heavy for it's size at approx 635 g. The reel would benefit from a service, & would take very little work to restore it to it's original glory.
