This is an Edwardian era tin plate & celluloid match box holder or grip, almost certainly a mourning or remembrance piece, & dating to around 1910. The holder is black in colour with the front having an oval cartouche, into which, a real & period photograph of an Edwardian family has been inserted (under celluloid). The cartouche is surmounted with an urn between 2 classical Greek or Roman Ladies playing some form of flute ?, with a standing Lady & an urn at the bottom. The spine has a foliate scroll design with a central cartouche containing the profile of a Lady. The rear of the case has a classical scene of a Lady beside an urn. Condition is almost MINT, extremely unusual for this type of holder (which were prone to rust 'bleeding'). There is no rust, splits, or other damage, & the interior is almost like new. The holder measures approx 2 3/8" x 1 5/8" x 7/8" (approx 6cm x 3.8cm x 2.1cm). |
