This is a decorative porcelain plate or dish, made by Paragon China to commemorate the coronation of King Edward VIII at Westminster Abbey on the 12th May 1937 (Which, of course, never happened as Edward abdicated in December 1936, in order to marry Mrs Wallis Simpson). The plate, which has a gilded rim, has two blue, yellow, & gilt banners around the edge, one with the motto 'EDWARD VIII KING AND EMPEROR', & the other with 'CROWNED MAY 12 - 1937'. The centre of the plate is decorated with a central, laurel wreath containing the Union Flag & a crown, which is surmounted with the flags of the Empire, & has a floral flourish below containing a ribbon which reads 'MAY 12 - 1937'. The base of the plate has the Paragon backstamp with 'BY APPOINTMENT', & reads 'A perpetual souvenir in Paragon China to commemorate the coronation of HM KING EDWARD VIII - Crowned Westminster Abbey - May 12 1937 - Registered & Copyright - Made in England'. Condition is Excellent for it's 73 years, with no chips, cracks, crazing, or wear to the gilding or pattern. The only thing to note is that there is a tiny (1mm) spot of very light staining (which is under the glaze & is almost certainly due to the manufacture) - Please see magnified photos. The plate measures approx 6 1/4" in diameter (approx 16cm). Overall, a lovely plate in fantastic condition, made by Paragon in 1936 in anticipation of the (never to happen) 1937 coronation of Edward VIII.
