This is a British made celluloid & tin plate matchbox cover or grip, and dating to the end of the World War One period, around 1917 - 1918. The front of the holder has the WW1 allies flags of Belgium, Romania (Roumania), Japan, Italy, France, Britain, the USA, & two others which I can't identify. The inclusion of the USA would date this holder to 1917 - 18. The spine reads 'MATCHES', 'BRITISH MADE', & a small 'P' (patent ?). The reverse of the holder has a print of a rural / countryside scene, with a shepard droving his sheep towards his cottage (this scene was probably used as a sign that the War would be ending soon, & things would return to (peaceful) normality). Condition is good for it's 90 odd years, the corners are bumped & there is some foxing / staining to the edges, but it is structurally sound, with a good (no rust) interior. The holder measures approx 6.3cm x 4.2cm x 2.4cm.
