This is a Victorian can or tin opener, made of cast iron with a steel twin blade, & dating to the latter part of the 19th Century, around 1880 - 90. The opener is in the form of a bull's head, with the handle in the form of the bull's tail. There is a steel twin blade fastened to the bull's neck via a screw. The short vertical spike on the blade (rising from the bull's head) was used to pierce the lid of the tin, & the cutting blade (under the bull's chin) was used to open the tin, using a 'see-saw' action. This form of opener was first introduced in the 1860's, & was supplied with tins of 'Bully Beef' tinned beef. Condition is Fine, with no damage. The opener would originally have been finished in black, but this has been almost completely rubbed over it's 130 odd years. The opener measures approx 6" or 15.2 cm in length, & is very heavy for it's size. |
