This is a large (4") Sadeli mosaic calling card case, made in India during the British Colonial period, and dating to around 1850 - 60. The rectangular case, which has a slightly 'cushion' form, has been made from Sandalwood & then veneered in 'bone' & sadeli mosaic in an exquisite geometric design. The front & rear of the case have a central rectangular panel consisting of complex sadeli mosaic polygons & bone triangles, bordered by bands of bone & ebony stringing and sadeli. Each edge of the case has inlaid sadeli roundels. The top of the case slides off to reveal the sandalwood lined interior. Condition is Fine, particularly given it's 160 years. There is a tiny (5mm) piece of bone stringing missing from one side, & the other side has two tiny areas of missing mosaic (difficult to notice & does not detract in any way). One of the interior sandalwood boards is missing, but this does not affect the case or it's operation. The case measures approx 4" by just under 3 1/4" (approx 10.3cm x 8.2cm).
