This is a large & wide, hand chased Victorian Silver hinged bangle, by the silversmiths Haseler Bros, & hallmarked for Birmingham 1883. The bangle is oval in form with folded edges & is hinged at one side and opened via a sprung clasp & protruding button on the opposite side. The front of the bangle has been hand chased with opposing 'triangles' at either side, which have a chequered crosshatch & 'X' design with bright cut & wriggle work edging, and a central floral / foliate design. This is a very early Haseler Brothers piece (who were entered in November 1883), & has two sets of unusual hallmarks, chiefly the omission of the duty mark & the date letter in a clipped corner square cartouche as opposed to an oval cartouche (although infrequent, between 1872 & 1894 both styles of cartouche can be found - Bradbury's Hallmarks) The interior of the bangle is hallmarked on either side: one side with the makers mark 'HBRS' (Edward John & Noble Haseler), the date letter, a gothic 'i' (1893 - 94), the anchor (Birmingham), & the lion passant (925 Sterling), with the date letter & the lion passant repeated on the other side. Condition is Fine. There is no damage or repairs, & the hinge & sprung clasp are fine - Excellent for it's 126 years. The bangle measures approx 2 3/4" in length, 2 1/8" wide (at widest point), & 1 1/4" deep (approx 7.1cm, 5.4cm, & 3.2cm). The bangle weighs 35.9 g, 1.27 oz, or 1.15 Troy. Overall, a stunning & early Haseler Bros bangle or bracelet in Fine condition - please see magnified photos.
