This is a plated brass figural novelty vesta or match safe, in the form of a Deer's leg or hoof & made by G. Goliasch & Co, of Berlin, Germany, (and bearing their trade mark), and dating to around 1890. The case is opened via a push button to the front, which springs open the hinged lid to reveal a compartment for storing matches. The base of the hoof is ridged, so to act as a striking surface. The interior of the lid is impressed with the trade mark of G.Goliasch & Co, which consists of a pair of back to back crescent moons. A similar case can be seen in the 'Schiffer Book of Match Holders', page 69, Fig 247. Condition of the case is Very Good. Although there is rubbing to the plate, it is extremely unusual to find an example with any plate left. The hinge, spring, & button are good. The case measures approx 5.7cm in Length and 1.5cm wide (at the lid). Overall, a lovely example of a Victorian era, fully marked G Goliasch 'deer leg' case, in great condition for it's 119 years. |
